Leatherback Sea Turtle
There are 5 types of sea turtles that can be found in south Florida and they are the loggerhead, green turtle, leatherback, Kemp's ridley, and hawksbill sea turtles. Now all of these sea turtles are listed as either threatened or endangered. There are some things already set in place to help all of these sea turtles like the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, which determines if someone is threatening the safety of any of these turtles. There are a lot of natural threats to leatherback sea turtle hatchlings in the everglades. Some organisms that prey on them are crocodiles, raccoons. and foxes. The leatherback sea turtle is the largest turtle in the world. These species of turtles usually have very long migration periods. The Leatherback Sea Turtle is the turtle that is going to be the main focus for this page since they are endangered but there are also many other organisms that live in the park that are endangered as well. There are many different reasons why these turtles are endangered and need to help to their population. Some reasons why the leatherback sea turtles are endangered are that not enough offspring make to the age to be able to reproduce. They are either eaten by predators or unable to get into the water once they get out of their shell. Without any parental supervision it is very hard for the sea turtle offspring to survive.
